Successful Live Streaming for Virtual Events

THE STORY

We are living in the golden era of live streaming right now. From church services to fitness classes, many day-to-day experiences are now accessible both in-person and online. This hybrid of event styles is part of the new norm, and it is probably here to stay.

The Challenge

While convenient for attendees, hosting hybrid events poses new challenges. Presenters must focus on delivering their message to a split audience while navigating the technologies and devices involved with live streaming. Often, an assistant behind the scenes is helping out, but that means more resources are required by the organization to coordinate and pay for. A livestream setup and additional support can add up quickly in terms of cost.

THE SOLUTION

We saw an opportunity to design and implement a user-friendly live streaming system that automates repetitive tasks and fully utilizes its’ camera functions to create great production quality.

As an example, in a church setting, a music leader can single-handedly live stream without added personnel. But, when there are multiple cameras involved, the typical workflow would be lining up the shot with a joystick controller while streaming or going live. That usually takes a second person doing it over and over again.

We analyzed the focal areas and then automated the cameras to record them. The control system was designed to avoid redundancy. With the press of a button, our system completes eight different steps. And, if a device involved fails, there is a hardwired backup in its place. It’s that simple.

PRODUCTS WE USED:

Minrray cameras look good at a great price.

Wirecast running on a Mac or Windows computer is a robust and flexible streaming solution that can grow with you. It has advanced features like graphical overlays, and the ability to stream to multiple platforms like Facebook and Youtube.

With additional hardware like a Stream Deck, the system can be automated and used with just a few button pushes.

Previously livestreaming was more of a luxury, but 2020 made it a necessity and it is here to stay. Many of our clients have increased attendance after providing a livestream to their audience.
